Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, declared her divorce from her partner Andrea Giambruno after he made “explicit remarks” off-air.
After almost ten years together, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Friday that she and her partner—the father of her little daughter—are divorcing.
Meloni announced the breakup of her relationship with Andrea Giambruno on social media. Their paths had parted “for some time,” according to her. The announcement was made in response to audio of on-air personality Giambruno allegedly making inappropriate comments to coworkers.
This week, Striscia la Notizia, an Italian satirical news program, used audio and backstage clips to present two evenings of programming on Giambruno. The late Silvio Berlusconi, whose Forza Italia party is a junior partner in Meloni’s cabinet, hosted a primetime show on Mediaset called Striscia.
Meloni’s government, the country’s first led by a woman and the first hard-right government since the conclusion of World War II, is celebrating its first anniversary this week.
Giambruno and Meloni share a 7-year-old daughter named Ginevra. When Meloni’s father left the family, she was raised by a single mother.
According to Meloni, Giambruno is a “fantastic” and present father who helps her care for their kid. She said in her 2021 book “I Am Giorgia” that Giambruno wouldn’t object if she had to step in while at work, despite her criticism that he was more messy than she was.
Meloni expressed her gratitude to Giambruno for their friendship and said she would stand by her daughter in her statement. “And because I was unable to love mine, I will defend, at all costs, a 7-year-old girl who loves her mother and her father.”
She also blasted “all those who hoped to weaken me by hitting me at home” in response to the public attention surrounding her revelation.
