On the passing of US Senator Dianne Feinstein, Governor Newsom

Today, following the loss of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement:

Dianne Feinstein was a number of things, including a strong, pioneering U.S. Senator, a pioneer in the fight for gun regulation, and a strong voice in times of sorrow and anarchy. But to me, she was a close friend, a mentor for life, and an example of what a strong, capable leader should be to my wife and girls as well.

On the Passing of U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein

She was a political powerhouse whose grace and persistence were equal. She dismantled obstacles and glass ceilings, but she never lost faith in the political cooperative spirit. And she was a fighter for the nation, state, and city she cherished. Her tale wasn’t just about being the first woman in a particular political office; it was about what she did for California and for America with that authority after she gained it. She made history in every race she won.

“There was just no one with the poise, seriousness, and tenacity of Dianne Feinstein. Her departure has severely upset Jennifer and me, and we will be there for her family during this trying time.

In honor of Senator Feinstein, the governor directed that all state flags be flown at half-staff.
